On Saturday, March 29, millions of citizens and businesses and 24 global cities switched off the power in a most remarkable campaign to fight global warming. What was most remarkable to me is that instead of feeling like we were sacrificing for an hour, the majority of participants actually had a blast! Turning off the power, for many people, meant lighting candles or campfires, getting together with friends and family, and spending an hour talking, laughing, and enjoying each other's company, instead of watching
TV or playing video games or sitting in front of a computer. People bonded, re-connected, and socialized. Others read books by flashlight or gazed up at the stars.
Some went for a flashlight-lit walk, and some roasted marshmallows over a small fire. The thing is, however you spent Earth Hour, chances are it was fun!
For us, that was the best part.
We still had some light at 8pm, when we simply turned the main breaker off on the house, to make sure that all of our electricity, including the pole barn and exterior lights, was off. We got a great little campfire going and opened a bottle of wine, watching the sun set. We talked and laughed and played with the dogs. Nissa reminded us that her favorite thing in the world to do, playing frisbee, is a very earth-friendly game, and that playing with dogs (and kids) is one of the healthiest and most earth-friendly ways to spend your time. As it got dark, the warm glow of the fire drew us nearer, and we enjoyed its warmth in these cooler-than-normal early days of spring.

who took the time to participate and celebrate protecting our planet. And if you missed this year's event, don't worry- next year will be even bigger!
Hi, Alex and Joanna!
Yes, we had a great time. The pictures are great.
Let's hope even more people join in next year...
